Fall 2023
I arrive on the property in the midst of Fall 2023 the architecture of the property carries a midcentury flair, the landscape is mature and the soil is sandy. A giant walnut tree inhabits the center of the square grass area acting as a focal point and defiant in nature. Two enormous Agave Century plants sit near the sidewalk one with its stalk reaching towards the powerlines above, a sculptural twisted myrtle encloses the front yard patio space. This landscape is vintage. The client who lives on this historic side of Vegas is Reyna MEENK. An eccentric woman with a love for plants and art alike. We (Norm Schilling, Elizabeth Kendall, and I) walk about the property and discuss design ideas with MEENK. The client likes the giant Agave Century plant that is yet to bloom so we keep it and remove the other one that has bloomed, but not without collecting a few pups first. We maintain all the mature trees on site and come up with a few ideas that stick the landing towards the end of the design process. What we come up with is a mixture of low water-to moderate water use plantings that accentuates the existing architecture and serves as a hybrid garden of modernism. It is both sacred and a museum of art. We utilize her existing sculptures and sprinkle them throughout the backyard landscape. MEENK also request a privacy screen in her backyard, so we install four metal trellises and attach cape honeysuckle to them. The landscape feels just right.
